Tuesday Trends: 5 Ways to Use Social Media at Your Wedding

If social media had a mission statement, it would be to bring people together while simultaneously keeping them informed. Here are 3 ways to do just that for the bride and groom’s big day!

1. Planning: A decade ago, wedding planning meant stacks of magazines and a three-ring binder for most brides. Today, everything needed to plan a wedding can be found on a smart phone. Pinterest is a great resource for getting ideas on everything from hair styles to bridesmaids dresses to event decor. And for the brides that don’t want every detail of their wedding shared before the big day, Pinterest has secret boards. If a bride needs more than inspiration to plan a wedding, Google has a wedding budget template and apps like lover.ly and The Knot can help tame the chaos before the nuptials. 

2. Day-Of Coordination: Utilize apps like Wedding Party, Wedding Planner for iPad, and appy couple for a more seamless day of experience. These apps have can coordinate vendor information, send out email reminders to the wedding party when they need to be somewhere, keep a shot list for photographers and so much more.

3. Crowdsource Your Photographs: Wedding photographs are the piece of the ceremony and reception that will last forever and many couples don’t want to miss out on the moments between their guests. Crowdsourcing wedding photos is a great way to involve their guests and have photographs they would otherwise not have. A popular trend now is creating a wedding hashtag and having guests share their photos on twitter and Instagram using the hashtag. Apps like WedPics, Snapable, and Eversnap allow the couple, the wedding party, and all the guests to share photos and videos during the ceremony and reception and order prints and albums to help remember the day.

Did You Know: Project Green Fork Edition

Mahaffey is excited to partner with Fuel Cafe this weekend for a wedding at the Metal Museum!
ImageFuel Cafe, located in Midtown, is one of many restaurants in Memphis that are Project Green Fork certified. Founded in 2008, Project Green Fork was established to reduce environmental impact, with an emphasis on supporting homegrown restaurants. 

Here are the six things that it takes to be Project Green Fork certified: 

1. All disposable products must be compostable, biodegradable, recyclable, or made from recycled content.

2. All items that can be recycled must be recycled (as recognized by Project Green Fork).

3. With the help of Project Green Fork, restaurants will establish a composting system for pre-consumed fruit, vegetable, coffee grounds, eggshell scraps, and other compostable waste. 

4. The use of toxic cleaners is discouraged and, whenever possible, must be replaced with plant-based and/or biodegradable cleaners. 

5. Establishments must complete an energy audit and attempt to reduce water and energy waste. 

6. All kitchens, front of houses, and outside areas should be clean and free of debris.

Mahaffey Partner Spotlight: the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum

The Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum is not only a beautiful place to get married but a piece of wonderfully-preserved Memphis history.

Built in 1871, the French Victorian mansion has been host to weddings since the 19th century, with several sites for a ceremony on the property. When the weather is agreeable, the front lawn of the Woodruff-Fontaine house is a scenic and beautiful place for a wedding ceremony and can accommodate up to 250 guests.

For a smaller wedding or cocktail hour after the ceremony, there is a lovely side garden fountain. In planning a wedding reception, the Woodruff Fontaine House has gorgeous options.

The Club Room, located inside the main house has a rustic, charming feel with French Victorian details in the architecture that stay true to the time period of the house. The club room is actually made up of several rooms featuring exposed brick and fireplaces. The Club Room can accommodate up to 125 people (as a fun side note, this is the room where I was in a wedding for the first time when my mother got married. I was nine years old so the room felt magical!)

     Accommodating up to 200 people, the quaint and charming Carriage House is yet another place for a spectacular wedding reception. It features beautiful french doors, an outdoor
     garden, a bride’s room and a large caterer’s kitchen.

The New Wedding Menu

A member of our wonderful local team, Angela, came across a great article on ideas for new wedding menus from Brides.Com.

The article had some great suggestions like smoked meats served tapas style, with imported French cheeses or rectangular trays made of ice for serving oyster shooters. Check them all out here. The article got me thinking about non-traditional wedding menus in general. For instance, I got married on a Sunday afternoon, so we served fresh fruit, cheeses, desserts and cocktails.

After some in-depth research (asking my girlfriends over brunch) here are some of the coolest new wedding menu trends:

1. Farmer’s Market Menu

Red potato salad with bacon, scallions and sour cream
Spinach salad with oranges, sundried tomatoes and candied almonds
Black bean and corn salad with fresh cilantro and lime
Grilled vegetables served with aioli
Baskets of freshly baked rolls, flatbread and cornbread served with butter

2. English Tea Menu

An assortment of chicken salad sandwiches and goat cheese and watercress sandwiches
Vegetable Tart
Orange Cranberry Scones
Chocolate Grape Truffles
Lemon Meringue Bars
Traditional English Wedding Cake (Fruit Cake)
Assortment of English Teas

 3. Movie Night Menu

Popcorn with an assortment of toppings
BBQ Chicken Nachos
Hot Pretzels in a variety of flavors (sweet & salty)

Coke and Root Beer Ice Cream Floats

The Best of Southern Weddings Part III

Beth, our wonderful marketing manager (and my awesome boss), had the pleasure of taking part in her sister Laura’s wedding this past Saturday at Heartwood Hall. Laura, who wed fiance Cary, were married in Heartwood Hall’s new ceremony and reception site, aptly titled The Barn.

How To Be a Good Southern Wedding Host

Being a gracious host is a big part of planning a wedding. Though it is your day, the people whom you chose to invite are your guests and should be thought of during the planning and on the day of your wedding.

Information is Power
It’s important to be as informative as possible when telling your guests about your upcoming nuptials. Save the Date cards, invitations and wedding websites are the best ways to inform your guests as a collective. Websites such as The Knot offer free hosting for wedding websites where you can  provide guests with information on hotels, things to do in your city, driving directions, specific attire concerns and more. If your location is new or particularly obscure, a direction card on how to get there should also be included in your invitations. Most importantly, your invitations should indicate the formality of the ceremony and reception and should be sent out within 6-8 weeks of your wedding date.

Thank You Notes
Today, it’s not uncommon for a couple to have multiple wedding showers prior to getting married. Promptness in sending out thank you notes is greatly appreciated by everyone and it will save you for doing them all at once post-wedding.  Designate one person per shower to write down who gave you what to insure personalized thank you cards and they should be in the mail within 10 days of your shower. Don’t forget, send a thank you note to the people who threw you the shower, even if they don’t give you a gift. As for guests who bring gifts to the ceremony, those thank you cards should be received two weeks after you return from the honeymoon.

Food for Thought
Receptions come in all shapes and sizes these days, particularly when it comes to food. The time of your ceremony generally indicates what type of food will be served- if your reception is at dinner time, it’s time to feed your guests dinner. Afternoon or very late evening receptions, however, have more flexibility. If you decide to serve a full meal, be mindful of your guests. If you’re a die-hard vegan, ask the caterers for a vegan plate for you but otherwise, plan your menu for the masses.  Particularly in the south, most guests won’t understand what a non-dairy dinner entails and will likely leave your reception hungry and confused.

Drinks Are On the House
Imagine if a friend or family member invited you over for a gathering of any kind and then asked that you pay them for your glass of wine. Having a cash bar at a wedding is essentially the same concept. Of course, not everyone wants to or can afford an open bar of every drink imaginable but there are creative options to keep everyone happy. If it’s a conservative reception or a need to cut costs, just serve everyone a glass of champagne for a toast. Another option is to eliminate liquor and simply serve wine and beer; having one white wine, one red wine and your favorite brew is a completely appropriate way to celebrate at your reception without breaking the bank.

Keep these little things in mind and also that, while it’s a day for you and your new spouse, it’s also polite and expected to remember the guests with whom you’ve decided to celebrate this amazing occasion.

How to Be a Good Southern Wedding Guest

In a search for fun and useful blog posts, sometimes outside research is necessary and that is what Beth and I tell ourselves when we buy and read magazines. Allure recently had an article “How to Be a Good Wedding Guest” which got us thinking what our rules would be for southern wedding guest etiquette.

RSVP ASAP
Being a polite wedding guest begins the second your postman drops off the invitation in your mailbox. Make a decision on whether or not you are attending sooner rather than later and definitely before the “please respond by” date on the invitation.

Invitation Information
While you’re promptly filling out the response card, take the time to peruse the information available on the invitation. A big one is what is listed on the envelope: who is the invitation addressed to? If you’re single and there is no “and guest” then sadly, your date will have to stay home. Carpool with a group of friends who are also invited to the wedding. If you’re a family but the invitation is addressed to “Mr & Mrs” then that means that you will be calling a sitter because it’s a kid free wedding.  However, if the invitation says “The Smith Family” then the children are more than welcome. No matter the circumstance, it’s never okay to bring an uninvited guest to a wedding.

Dress for the Occasion

Here’s how important the invitation is: this information is also available on there. When you’re planning your wardrobe for a wedding, take note of a few things: the ceremony time, the ceremony location and the type of invitation. If the ceremony begins at 2 in the afternoon in an outdoor garden, you can skip the gowns and diamonds. However, if it doesn’t start until 7 or 8 in the evening in an elegant hotel, chances are the dress is more formal. If you’re close enough with the bride, groom or someone in the wedding party, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking what attire is required.
And remember, it’s still not okay to wear any shade of white.

Drink in Moderation
All wedding guests over the age of 21 enjoy the open bar available at many weddings. However, a drink during cocktail hour,  toasting to the bride and grooms new happy life or a glass of your favorite spirit is perfectly appropriate, there is certainly a limit on drinks if you want to be a gracious guest. Know your limits and appreciate them- there is no table dancing, drunken toast giving or, worst of all, getting sick at weddings, southern or otherwise.

Following these little guidelines will help ease stress of the bride on her special day and help you to do what you came there to do- Have fun!

The Best of Southern Weddings Part II! {Guest Post}

A special thank you to our friends at Southern Bride. Below is a recent blog post that goes along with our “Best of Southern Weddings” series. Hope you get as much inspiration out of it as we did! You can’t get any more Southern than mason jars. :)

The Mason Jar, also known as “Ball Jar” was invented in 1858 by John Mason. The original purpose of the mason jar was to be used for preserving and storing food. They are still used for that very purpose today, but have also become quite popular for weddings as well. Many brides have been using mason jars to incorporate a little southern flair into their big day.

They can be used in so many ways! They can be a decoration with candles or flower arrangements inside, on tables, as aisle markers, as table numbers, filled with some treats/favors for the guests, and of course they can be used to serve food and drinks.

Mason jars can be used in both formal and casual settings. Adding some beautiful floral centerpieces can make them more formal, while placing a single stem or votive candle can make it more casual. They can also be used as glasses for your guests to drink from. You can serve Southern favorites like lemonade or sweet tea or even a signature, Southern cocktail.

Holly and Aaron Ryan, who were married in Moorseville, AL used mason jars to decorate the church they were married in. They hung the jars on the pews with simple flower arrangements and delicate ribbon The church was very old and Holly did not want to take away from the character of the church, which is why the mason jars worked so well. Their wedding was a true, Southern event and the mason jars added that special touch and set the tone for their special, Southern celebration.
