Three Popular Flowers for Fall Weddings October 11, 2011

Wondering what some of the most popular flowers are for this fall wedding season? If you’re a fall bride, then listen up because this blog post is for you! We’ve stumbled upon three types of flowers that are hot this fall season, and we want to share them. Enjoy!

Dahlias

Dahlias can make any fall bouquet pop! Since they are a garden flower, they look great paired with other garden flowers like peonies and daisies. They are beautiful, bold and bushy, so their dramatic appearance is sure to catch the eyes of your guests. You can expect to pay around $5 per stem for dahlias, but it is well worth it because their blooms are often over 4” across. This size is great for helping to fill out bouquets, center pieces and other wedding floral decor. Dahlias come in a variety shapes, sizes and colors including white, yellow, orange, hot pink, burgundy and burgundy/black. They also come in bi-color varieties.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas create and elegant and beautiful accent when used in wedding floral. They can be incorporated into bridal bouquets as well as ceremony and reception flowers. Hydrangeas have a big, bushy head, which help to fill empty spaces. Because they are so large and beautiful, some brides choose to use only hydrangeas in their bouquet. They are moderately priced and come in a variety of shades such as green, pink, burgundy and blue.

Mums

Mums are playful and unique, so they generally look best when incorporated into bouquets with other types of flowers. Mums also look great as boutonnieres and corsages, providing a pop of color to the wedding party floral. They are relatively inexpensive considering their size, and they come in a variety of colors including white, off-white, yellow, gold, bronze, red, burgundy, pink and purple. Mums are also easy to tint, so if you want a particular color, but can’t find it – tinting is always an option.

The Best of Southern Weddings Part II! {Guest Post} May 25, 2011

A special thank you to our friends at Southern Bride. Below is a recent blog post that goes along with our “Best of Southern Weddings” series. Hope you get as much inspiration out of it as we did! You can’t get any more Southern than mason jars. :)

The Mason Jar, also known as “Ball Jar” was invented in 1858 by John Mason. The original purpose of the mason jar was to be used for preserving and storing food. They are still used for that very purpose today, but have also become quite popular for weddings as well. Many brides have been using mason jars to incorporate a little southern flair into their big day.

They can be used in so many ways! They can be a decoration with candles or flower arrangements inside, on tables, as aisle markers, as table numbers, filled with some treats/favors for the guests, and of course they can be used to serve food and drinks.

Mason jars can be used in both formal and casual settings. Adding some beautiful floral centerpieces can make them more formal, while placing a single stem or votive candle can make it more casual. They can also be used as glasses for your guests to drink from. You can serve Southern favorites like lemonade or sweet tea or even a signature, Southern cocktail.

Holly and Aaron Ryan, who were married in Moorseville, AL used mason jars to decorate the church they were married in. They hung the jars on the pews with simple flower arrangements and delicate ribbon The church was very old and Holly did not want to take away from the character of the church, which is why the mason jars worked so well. Their wedding was a true, Southern event and the mason jars added that special touch and set the tone for their special, Southern celebration. A Southern Kind of Wedding Rich in Tradition February 4, 2011

Once the “party after the party” commenced, preparations for the wedding reception began. The bride’s family rented out an old warehouse, now frequently used as an event venue, and we transformed it into a southern bride’s dream, complete with both modern and traditional elements.

Mahaffey set up three tents: one used as a covered entryway for cars to load and unload guests, another as a coat check area, and the last to enclose the front of the warehouse. We created a makeshift bridge over the curb going into the warehouse, as well as a 20′ gutter system from the entryway tent to the front enclosure.

Elegant crush linens paired with silver chiavari chairs and bar stools gave this venue the upscale vibe the bride was going for. The exquisite floral and votive centerpieces added to the modern look.

Here is another view of the reception layout…what a great idea the planner had to set up the open bar in the middle! Easy access to booze no matter where you were seated! Same with the food tables.

Because they were so elegantly decorated, the bar and food areas fit in well with the modern/nature theme.

Absolutely stunning cake display!

The bride’s father is involved with the New Orleans Saints, so of course the game had to be on during the reception…

Need a unique idea for a drink to serve? A friend of the family owns a vineyard in Napa Valley, and they had a few cases of red wine blended and bottled especially for the happy couple. Talk about a nice gift!

Guest Post: Social Butterflies… Sweet 16 at The Cotton Gin! November 8, 2010

A few weeks ago we had a client who wanted to surprise her daughter with a Sweet 16 party. Their family has owned a cotton farm for many generations, and they wanted to host the soiree in their retired cotton gin. I was thrilled to use an out-of-the-box venue and excited about the challenge of designing a “Country Couture” event in such utilitarian space.

I began brainstorming for decor details by getting to know the client’s daughter. Because the party was a surprise, I had to do so through photographs and stories from her mother. She wanted “country,” but not “cowgirl.” Her favorite color is teal and she loves shopping at Anthropologie She is chic yet laid back, athletic and a social butterfly (like us!). I knew the client wanted to use resources already available, such as bales of hay and twinkle lights. Check out what we came up with, most images beautifully captured by photographer Angie Gibson Ford, the less professional ones by us!

Rice plants and cotton stalks right from their farm were affordable and oh so shabby chic! We love them nestled between the gin’s retired utilities.

To fill the large ceiling space of the gin, we needed more than twinkle lights. Full country moons inspired these round orbs floating in the rafters. Guess what they are – latex balloons! We found 3′ diameter circular balloons and had them strung with fishing wire at varied heights. They drew the eye upward and glowed in the party light. A birthday party is not complete without balloons, but we of course had to think of an out-of-the-box way to incorporate them.

The client had this custom banner printed to welcome guests. You can see the twinkle lights and “moon” balloons peeking through the entry way.
We got creative to work within the budget. We used wonderful resources at the farm to craft country couture centerpieces. We filled assorted vases with tied wheat and grains of rice. The ribbon and butterflies add pops of color to the neutral, organic palette of the farm.
Tall cotton stalks add height to table arrangements in dramatic glass cylinders.
We created long tablescapes on each 6′ table by staggering clusters of glass vases filled with various materials. Floating candles compliment the white pops of cotton. We mixed in soft, worn cotton linens with our chocolate brown ones to create an eclectic country vibe.
Short, square chunky vases mix it up. We filled them with rice and planted white paper roses on floral wire.
Brass lanterns and bird cages sprinkled the gift tables.
To bring country to chic, we created lounge areas with bales of hay and linens. We mixed burlap linens with teal and white and added chocolate sashes to tie them together (linens and sashes courtesy of Mahaffey Tent and Party Rentals. The lounge vignettes, also provided by Mahaffey, fringed the dance floor so guests could flop down to rest their dancin’ feet!
In lieu of a candy bar, we created a country tea and lemonade bar with our assorted apothecary jars. We mixed raspberry sweet tea, peach lemonade and other delectable mixes to quench the thirst of those teenage dancers.
The focal point of the decor was a 20 foot burlap back drop strung with a Happy Sweet Sixteen message to the birthday girl. We ordered the letters from Etsy and they came out perfectly! We strung them on twine and ribbon and used clothespins to pin them up. We also strung pictures of the birthday girl – from high chairs to high heels – for guests to reminisce over.
The whimsical cake came from Cakes by Mom and Me was a hit! We elevated it on a stand covered in a burlap linen tied with a chocolate sash.
Guests signed a framed invitation so the birthday girl would remember this party for birthdays to come.

This party was a great experience for us- we got to think outside the box and utilize a totally different space. We had a great time and we hope the guests did as well!

- Thanks to Social Butterflies for this fabulous guest post!

What’s hot right now? Glassware for food serving! Hors d’Oeuvres, desserts, you name it… This season, it’s all about nontraditional presentations.

If you’re looking to break the traditional five-course approach, base your wedding reception on cocktails and appetizers. This catering serving style allows for more variety and ample opportunity for creative presentation ideas.

Serve a signature dish, like shrimp and grits, at a customized martini station. Feature a mashed potato bar for your guests to dress how they want. And desserts? The possibilities are endless!

These culinary works of art create an intimate social atmosphere for your guests.

Love a rooftop party? We do, too! This event, which took place atop one of the staple hotels of Downtown Memphis, has modern and cool written all over it.

Ultra hip lounge furniture, the ever-popular Ghost chairs, white linens, and exotic tabletop decor fill up this swanky rooftop to create a downtown chic vibe. We’re sure it left a lasting impression for all guests, and hopefully inspired others for their own pre-wedding soiree.
